William Creek Hotel - William Creek South Australia
William Creek Hotel stands out like a oasis in the desert. Along the Oodnadatta Track, about halfway from Oodnadatta to Marree and halfway from Adelaide to Alice Springs, the William Creek Hotel was built in 1887 to service the Ghan railway line that travelled between Alice Springs and Adelaide. William Creek is famous for its "William Creek Hotel". You can stop here to have a cold drink or a meal and to look at the unique interior. The William Creek Hotel provides drinks and refreshments for travelling tourists. Meals and accommodation are available for those who wish stay a little longer. William Creek is South Australia's smallest town. The town is surrounded by one of Australia's largest cattle properties, Anna Creek Station which is almost half the size of Tasmania. The old Ghan railway, which passed through William Creek, ran from Port Augusta via Quorn, Hawker, Parachilna, Copley, Farina, Marree, Curdimurka, William Creek and Oodnadatta to Alice Springs. Construction of this narrow gauge line started in 1878. The old Ghan line was used for the last time in October 1980, but the William Creek Hotel lives on. William Creek is also the closest settlement to Lake Eyre North. Lake Eyre is the world's largest salt lake and Australia's largest inland lake.
